Choosing The Best Dehumidifier For Your Home Is Vital
Let us guide you through the key factors in home dehumidifiers.
Deciding what dehumidifier is best for your needs can be tricky. Here we have outlined three different types of dehumidifier and what applications they are best suited to.
Compressor dehumidifiers
Compressor dehumidifiers have been around the longest and are still the most popular. They are similar in terms of reliability to a fridge. They are energy efficient except at very low temperatures, which may occur in remote unheated properties.
Compressor dehumidifiers produce a cold surface to extract moisture, this moisture is condensed and collected in a container that is then easy to remove and dispose of. They use refrigeration technology which is more energy efficient than drying by heating.
At normal UK home conditions, the best compressor dehumidifiers will only use half of the electricity compared to a desiccant dehumidifier for the same amount of water extracted. A compressor dehumidifier with Ebac’s smart control will use even less electricity.
Desiccant dehumidifiers
Desiccant dehumidifiers work by using a spinning wheel. This wheel has absorbent material that can take large amounts of water out of the air. They can be very expensive to run and are therefore best for industrial applications.
Desiccant dehumidifiers are mainly used where temperatures are less than 5ºC or when a very low Relative Humidity is required. Desiccants will extract moisture down to zero, while compressor dehumidifiers can’t get much below 35% Relative Humidity. In domestic applications, Relative Humidity below 35% is not advisable for health reasons.
Since desiccant dehumidifiers remove the same amount of water regardless of the temperature or Relative Humidity, they can perform better than compressor dehumidifiers at lower temperatures and lower Relative Humidity in industrial settings. They are not recommended for domestic use but work extremely well in industrial settings where running costs do not matter.
Peltier dehumidifiers
Peltier dehumidifiers are similar to compressor dehumidifiers in that they produce a cold surface to condense the water. They use an electro-thermal device which requires electricity. However, capacities are low, less than 10% of compressor dehumidifies.
Hopefully we have given you more information about which type of dehumidifier is best depending on where you plan to use it. Head over to our website to see our full range of dehumidifiers. Ebac.com
