5 Questions You Should Ask Before Buying a Dehumidifier
24th Nov 2023
Dehumidifiers are a necessity. They protect your home from condensation, which stops mould and damp in its tracks. But don’t just go buying any old dehumidifier. There are 5 questions you should ask yourself before buying a dehumidifier.
1. Where Was it Made?
Steer clear of dehumidifiers made in China; these were manufactured to suit European countries where condensation build-up is caused by high humidity and temperatures, not cold, wet weather.
These dehumidifiers aren’t built to suit the British climate, so they don’t work effectively here.
2. How Expensive Is It?
When it comes to dehumidifiers, you get what you pay for. Cheap dehumidifiers will often be built with cheap parts and low-quality products. These are often noisy, break easily, and aren’t made for long-term use.
Cheap dehumidifiers also tend to hike up energy bills. Their average energy usage is higher than the more expensive dehumidifiers because they're not as efficient.
3. Is it a Desiccant or Compressor Dehumidifier?
Desiccants and compressors are the two main types of dehumidifiers. Avoid buying a desiccant dehumidifier for your home, as these are made for large-scale industrial sites. Desiccant dehumidifiers aren’t energy efficient, making them an expensive addition to your electricity bill.
4. Does it Have a Humidistat?
Avoid dehumidifiers with humidistats, too. For these to work effectively, you'd need to constantly alter the settings. There are times when the air is more moister than others, but of course, you can’t know that unless your dehumidifier has a system that tells you. Unfortunately, dehumidifiers with humidistats don’t, but Ebac’s Smart Control dehumidifiers do.
5. Does it Have Smart Control?
Go for an Ebac dehumidifier with Smart Control. These constantly monitor the moisture levels in your home and adjust your dehumidifier. This ensures your dehumidifier isn’t running when it doesn’t have to. This can save you over £50 a year in energy bills!
