5 Steps to Choosing the Right Dehumidifier

1st Dec 2023

You’ve made the decision to buy a dehumidifier. Now, you have to decide which type. You’ll be faced with a flood of information upon entering a shop. Follow these 5 simple steps to ensure you choose the dehumidifier that’s right for your home.

1. Check Where It’s Built

UK-manufactured dehumidifiers are best for UK homes. These are specifically designed to suit the ever-changing UK climate. Chinese-manufactured dehumidifiers are cheap but ineffective. They’re designed with the European environment in mind; hot temperatures and high humidity. This is fundamentally different to our cold, damp UK air.

2. Check What Type it is

Desiccant and compressor are the two main types of dehumidifiers. Desiccant dehumidifiers contain a wheel that absorbs moisture and a heater that extracts it and drops it into the container.

Compressor dehumidifiers are made up of a cold surface that attracts the moisture, condenses it, then releases it into the container.

Desiccant dehumidifiers require 650 watts of energy. Compressor dehumidifiers need 150 watts to complete the same task. Compressor dehumidifiers are therefore more energy-efficient, saving you money in the long run.

3. Check its Size

Check the dehumidifier's capacity. Below 2 litres will not be sufficient for a UK home. A capacity grossly exceeding 2 litres may extract too much water and be too heavy to empty.

4. Check the Control System

Manual control systems such as manual humidistats require constant attention, as the settings need to be altered multiple times a day. An automatic system, such as Ebac’s Smart Control system, does the hard work for you, checking the air’s moisture levels and adjusting itself.

5. Check its Price

Excessively cheap dehumidifiers are made of low-quality materials and are thus inefficient. They are more likely to break quickly and will hike up your energy bills in no time.
